Nano? Sure!

We support the development of safe future technologies based on a solid ethical foundation. Nanotechnology and biotechnology are advancing enormously fast into our everyday life. They arouse expectations and open up new horizons. At the same time they stir up questions that affect our self-conception and that of our society. How will nanotechnology and biotechnology change our future – our social life, working world and consumer behaviour? What will happen to our social security system? To what extent are we willing to accept changes? We can only gain trust by being transparent and giving insight into our technology. We advocate public and offensive debates because we take these questions seriously. Have a look at our activities:

Conference "SIZE MATTERS 2009. Ethical challenge of nanotechnology"
In cooperation with other organisations we organised a two-day international science conference in Saarbrücken in 2009 on ”Nano and ethics“. Well-known experts from different disciplines discussed the ethical dimension of nanotechnology. Their talks will be published as a special conference edition. Link to SIZE MATTERS

"Saarbrücken declaration on nanotechnology"
In cooperation with the experts of the SIZE MATTERS conference we composed the „Saarbrücken declaration on nanotechnology” to make the scientific results of the conference accessible to a broad public. It can also be considered an action guide for the decision-makers in politics, science and economy. We invite every citizen who is interested in nanotechnology to support the content of the declaration with their signature. This link leads you to our separate topic website. Code of conduct on nanoscience and nanotechnology
A premiere: It’s the first time that members of a network have declared – on a voluntary basis - their commitment to keep to the guidelines of a code of conduct: every network member is now expressly bound to observe the established rules. All members support this code which embeds the developments of nanoscience and nanotechnology into an ethical and safety-related framework. The code is based on the “Code of Conduct of the European Commission“ and the „Responsible nanocode” and is the implementation of the code’s stipulations at network level. Download (in German)

Brochure "Safety of nanotechnology"
The association-owned brochure published in 2007 critically discusses the safety of nanotechnology. Download (in German)
